Inside a room at Harbour View B&B, a top Mull accommodation recommendation/ Painted white stone wall with a bed and white desk. It looks very cottage core.

Harbour View is my favourite place to stay on Mull. It’s a pretty family-run B&B in Tobermory which is located on the hill above the town. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the ferry. I loved the breakfasts here and the family was so welcoming.

Where to stay on Mull, Scotland: village guide

From castles to glamping pods and self-catered cottages, here’s the best accommodation on Mull! Photo credit: Western Isles Hotel

The Isle of Mull is a large island (second only to the Isle of Skye’s size next door to it). There are lots of small villages dotted about, each one offering something different.

Whether you’re looking for a rural escape or a more lively stay, here’s a quick breakdown of some of the main villages so you can get a sense of what’s in store!

Tobermory

Located on the northeast of the island, Tobermory is the main settlement on the Isle of Mull. Once an 18th Century fishing village, it’s most well known for its colourful houses along the harbourfront.

These houses were the inspiration behind the popular children’s TV programme Balamory!

The best Mull accommodation is in Tobermory. Image of Tobermory Harbour with colourful houses
The colourful houses of Tobermory

Tobermory is a gorgeous settlement in its own right and the best place to stay on Mull if you want to be close to the main attractions or don’t have a car.

Here, you’re within walking distance of Aros Park, Rubhna nan Gall Lighthouse and Isle of Mull Cheese.

The popular Staffa Tours departs from here on a boat trip of Staffa and the Treshnish Isles.

There’s also an award-winning fish ‘n’ chip van, a historic sailor’s pub, a whisky distillery, plus plenty of restaurants and independent shops!

Best for: non-drivers wanting an easy base close to the ferry, great pubs, amazing food and wildlife tours

Craignure

Image of the Sound of Mull with hills in the distance and boats on the beach in Craignure.
Peaceful Craignure

Craignure is probably the second most popular settlement on Mull. Located on the island’s southeast corner, it has a busy port with ferries coming in from Oban on the mainland.

There are a few small shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. The best one in the area is the Craignure Inn.

Craignure has gorgeous views across the bay up towards Loch Linnhe and Ben Nevis near Fort William on the mainland. There are plenty of great walks you can do in the surrounding area.

Not too far from the settlement is Duart Castle, one of the last clan-owned castles in Scotland (and still is today!).

Best for: ferries from Oban, plenty of walks, Duart Castle

Other places to stay on Mull

Rubhna nan Gall Lighthouse outside Tobermory, Isle of Mull. A ferry going through the water behind.

There are plenty of other smaller villages on Mull. Each one promises breathtaking views but takes a little extra effort to get to:

Dervaig

Located on Mull’s north coast, Dervaig is home to the oldest inn on the island – the Bellachroy (1608) – which is still going strong today.

Come here for the sheltered Loch Cuin, an excellent village shop and plenty of sandy beaches.

Best for: remote beaches, village life, pretty lake

Fionnphort

Fionnphort is located on the southwestern tip of Mull.

The village has stunning sandy beaches on its doorsteps, with plenty of coastal walks to enjoy. It also has a tiny port where you can catch the ferry over to Iona.

Best for: walks, beaches and the ferry to Iona

Bunessan

Situated on the shores of the Ross of Mull, Bunessan is on the southwestern tail of the island. There are a couple of village shops here, beautiful beaches and glorious views.

Come here for a quiet holiday surrounded by nature.

Best for: quaint village life, beaches and views

Where’s the best place to stay on Mull?

The best place to stay on Mull really is subjective to you, what you like and how you want to get around the island.

If you drive, you have a little more freedom to stay in remote places. If not, you’ll want to stay close to a ferry terminal.

I think staying in Tobermory is best because you’re right in the middle of things. It’s the main village on the island, and it has a port.

You can go island hopping, and you’re close to nearby attractions. Plus, the colourful houses are a must-see!

Tobermory is a great starting point for going more inland either on foot, cycling or transport. I stayed in Tobermory on my 10-day West Coast of Scotland itinerary.

Right in the centre of Tobermory’s main street, the hostel is among the brightly coloured buildings that sit along the harbour front.

Inside, the amenities are simple but clean and colourful. And there’s free WIFI.

There’s a choice of rooms, including budget-friendly male-only and female-only dormitories (averaging about £26 a night), private rooms, quadruple rooms and family rooms.

None of them have ensuite bathrooms, but there are plenty of facilities on site.

The front-facing rooms have gorgeous views of the harbour that you won’t get anywhere else at that price.

Located in Craignure, Craignure Bunkhouse is a slightly more upmarket hostel with a higher price point but is still fairly budget-friendly as far as accommodation goes.

A cross between a guest house and a hostel, there are 20 bunk beds divided between four rooms. Two sleep six, and two sleep four. They’re ideal for solo travellers, small groups and families.

Each room has an ensuite bathroom, and each bunk has a super comfortable bed, linen, reading light and USB port.

The cosy living space has squashy sofas and a wood-burning stove – perfect for relaxing beside after a busy day exploring Mull or getting to know other travellers.

3. Harbour View B&B (££-£££)

A bedroom in Harbour View B&B in Tobermory, Mull. A white bed with a towel in the shape of a flower in it. One of the best Mull accommodation.
My room in Harbour View

Hands down, my favourite accommodation on Mull is the family-run Harbour View B&B.

Located in a pink house on a hill overlooking Tobermory Harbour, this cosy B&B has comfy rustic-meets-seaside rooms complete with a shower ensuite and delicious cooked breakfasts in the morning.

The bed is wonderfully comfy, and amenities include a tea, coffee station, and TV.

What sets this accommodation apart is that the owners look after you. We had a very early ferry to catch when we had to leave, so they kindly made us a packed breakfast.

Harbour View is on a bit of a steep hill (good for getting your steps in!), but it’s very close to the centre of Tobermory and only a short walk from the ferry terminal.

Top features:

  • Great breakfasts
  • Ensuite bathrooms
  • Comfortable bed

4. Park Lodge Hotel  (££)

A pretty garden in summer | Photo credit: Park Lodge Hotel

Park Lodge is a relatively budget-friendly 3-star hotel in the upper part of Tobermory.

The family-run establishment has slightly rustic Scottish-themed interiors with wooden furniture and soft tartan furnishings.

From its vantage point on the hill, the hotel escapes the hustle and bustle of Tobermory, but it’s only a short walk away, so if you’re looking for a quiet escape with pretty views, stay here!

In terms of rooms, they’re comfortable and clean – at a great price too.

Choose between standard doubles and twins or upgrade to superior. All rooms have an ensuite bathroom too.

My favourite thing about this hotel is that it has a fully stocked Scottish bar with local malt whiskies and ales. Plus, everyone raves about the excellent cooked breakfast that’s included with your stay!

Top features:

  • Scottish bar
  • Delicious cooked breakfast
  • Budget-friendly hotel

5. The Tobermory Hotel (££)

A room with a double bed and cosy furnishings at The Tobermory Hotel.
Cosy furnishings at The Tobermory

The Tobermory Hotel is a great choice for couples wanting something unique at a reasonable price.

The pretty pink-painted hotel is located at the far end of Tobermory’s Main Street. You certainly won’t miss it!

The inside is tastefully decorated with traditional-looking furnishings and the squashiest armchairs just calling for you to sink into after a day on your feet.

The bar and restaurant attached have beautiful exposed stone walls with a roaring open fire on the hearth. The menu is all about fresh local seafood, and it’s utterly delicious.

Then you’re invited to chase it down with a dram of whisky produced just five minutes from your doorstep.

Renovated from a 200-year-old fisherman’s cottage, the rooms are stylish and comfortable, with most of them looking out across the harbour. Most rooms have an ensuite bathroom.

Top features:

  • Beautifull-decorated hotel
  • Good location
  • Excellent restaurant

Best luxury accommodation on Mull

Here is my favourite luxury Mull accommodation featuring castles, towers and amazing views!

6. Glengorm Castle (£££)

Grey Glengorm Castle with towers and a green lawn on the Isle of Mull.
Check out their website here as the image just doesn’t do it justice!

Ever dreamed of staying in a Scottish castle? Now’s your chance with the utterly beautiful Gengorm Castle just 6km outside Tobermory.

The 19th-century country house cuts a dramatic image with rooms bearing gorgeous views to match the stuff that honeymoons or romantic getaways are made of.

You can choose catered and self-catered accommodation.

You have the option to stay in the castle in Tower Rooms which sleep four and contain a fully-equipped kitchen.

The Steadings is a fully serviced and self-catered apartment converted from farm stables for a more intimate setting.

The castle also provides a bed and breakfast, beautifully decorated ensuite rooms, super king-size beds, and cosy seating areas. Guests also have access to the library, breakfast room and library.

Top features:

  • B&B and self-catered accommodation
  • Beautiful breakfast room
  • A real Scottish castle!

7. Western Isles Hotel (££)

Pride of place above Tobermory | Photo credit: Western Isles Hotel

Okay, this isn’t Mull’s swankiest hostel, but hear me out. Western Isles Hotel looks like Tobermory’s own castle.

Despite being a 3-star, the hotel’s glamorous fairytale-looking towers and historic charm rival some of the more typically luxurious stays on the island. It also has much better reviews!

And if you’re thinking longingly about Glengorm Castle but can’t quite justify the cost, Western Isles Hotel is a great alternative!

Locate high above Tobermory, the hotel is pretty much the first building you notice if you arrive by ferry.

Inside, it has stunning views back out across the harbour. You can enjoy meals and a tipple with a view at the hotel’s conservatory restaurant.

And the bedrooms? All are spacious with a mix of contemporary comfort and classic design, so each has plenty of character.

There are also dog-friendly rooms available so your furry friend can sleep like royalty too.

Top features:

  • Dog-friendly rooms
  • Conservatory restaurant
  • Great views

These dog-friendly cottages on the Isle of Mull sleep three are ideal for couples or small families.

Haunn Cottages are 8 miles from Tobermory and 15 miles from Dervaig, so you are out in Mull’s wild, hilly landscape.

Better still, you’re just a 10-minute walk from the beach, and you’re in an excellent spot for wildlife spotting.

My favourite aspect about Haunn Cottages is that they have a Green Tourism award, meaning they’re committed to sustainable tourism.

White farming house, a cottage on the Isle of Mull with green hills behind.
Stay near Fionnphort

Perfect for families or friend groups (it sleeps up to 6), Assapol Cottage is a beautiful self-catered accommodation in Bunessan. Basically, the tail of Mull when you look at it on a map.

The cottage is surrounded by a rural landscape and just a short drive from Fionnphort, where you can catch the ferry to Iona – ideal if you want to discover the birthplace of Celtic Christianity!

You’re treated to glorious sea views from the cottage towards the Treshnish Isles. Not a bad view to wake up to.

I love that although the furnishings have been modernised for comfort, there’s still a rustic charm about the decor, which hails back to the cottage’s farmhouse past.

To top it off, the lounge has a log-burning fire for cosy nights in.

  • Wood-burning stove

Shieling tents are a great middle-of-the-road option between camping and a holiday home, but if you would prefer the latter, there are two sweet little cottages too.

Nevis Cottage and Cruachan Cottage are family-friendly rentals that offer a simple home away from home. They both sleep up to 4 and come equipped with a kitchen, TV, heating and WiFi.

Top features:

  • Tents, glamping and cottages
